Top 3 Benefits of cycling

(in relation to Uni Garden community)


1. It’s good for your health! Everyone wants to be healthier, right? Well, the moderate or rigorous exercise you get from bicycling (depending on how and where you bike) can go a looooong way in helping you on that. It’s definitely an easy, fun, and cheap way to improve your health and feel better.

2. Cycling nearby our house allow us to connect to neighbors and know each other better. For example, knowing each other in a neighborhood potentially lead to a safer neighborhood. While cycling in group, we can practice "neighborhood watch".

3. It is a very efficient and cheap mode of transportation for short distance (e.g. nearby your house).

Owing a modern bike

There are a few types of folding bike that is can fit into a small car boot (e.g. Viva). So we can bring it to places such as Stutong Park, Kuching Riverside and Pustaka Negeri.

It is available in a bike shop in Desa Ilmu, You can contact Mr. Alex @ 016-8584908. The shop is next Almas and a Tyres shop (near 7- Eleven).

I bought my first folding bike in Kuching town at RM550. Today, the price for folding bike has drop. The price for this bike is below RM400 at Golden Trading, Desa Ilmu.

KAWASAN RUKUN TETANGGA (KRT UNI GARDEN 1)

Rukun Tetanggan merupakan satu program sukarela yang bertujuan untuk membantu dalam pembangunan  masyarakat Uni Garden serta merapatkan hubungan di antara penduduk yang pelbagai kaum . Konsep program  ini sama seperti  NEGIHBOURHOOD Watch yang diamalkan di United Kingdom.

Peranan utama program ini ialah untuk melahirkan kerjasama di antara satu sama lain untuk mengurangkan berlakunya kegiatan jenayah di sekitar kawasan kejiranan. Di samping itu,ianya digalakkan untuk menganjurkan pelbagai aktiviti kemasyarakatan serta kebajikan bagi meningkatkan perpaduan  dan Integrasi kaum seperti Skim Rondaan Sukarela (SRS), Gotong Royong dan Majlis Ramah Tamah.

Membantu dalam pembentukan satu bangsa Malaysia yang bersatu padu dalam konteks pencapaian Wawasan 2020.

Memupuk kesefahaman dan bertolak ansur ke arah    pembangunan bangsa Malaysia yang bersatu padu serta beridentiti sendiri.

security measures

Dari perbincangan dgn penghuni-penghuni Uni Garden semenjak 4 bulan yang lalu, berikut adalah maklumat yang diterima:

Latest update : 09 Jul 2016.(font in red)

1. Rumah mesti ada "grill". Rumah siapa tak ada.

2. Pasang "hotel lock" disetiap pintu bilik. Murah (RM50 each). Keselamatan semasa anda tidur.

3. Rumah mesti pasang alarm (RM2k). Kalau mampu, pasang juga CCTV & Streamyx/Unifi(2k). Ada wireless alarm yang harganya kurang dari RM500 (4 detector) kalau pasang sendiri.

4. Sediakan "pepper spray" dirumah (RM30 each). Gantung disebelah dalam pintu bilik tidur.

5. Pasang pintu pagar di tempat masuk lorong belakang (alleyway) rumah (rumah tepi).

6. "Neighbourhood watch" & crime management di Uni G belum cukup kuat. Jadi kita joinlah KRT, Rela, CP dll. Join semua kalau mampu. Jadikanlah KRT (SRS), Rela, CP di Uni G. lebih kuat. Neighborhood watch WhatsApp as low cost platform to know each others. Kita boleh warwarkan dengan notis ringkas kepada mereka yg belum jadi ahli. Mereka (pencuri) yang nak pecah masuk rumah akan fikir dua tiga kali selepas mengetahui aktiviti meronda tersebut.

7. Kerja sama rapat dengan pihak polis. Boleh minta pihak Polis beri taklimat berkaitan keselamatan diperumahan. Panggilan terus ke 999 mungkin lebih berkesan dari pangilan terus ke pejabat terdekat, jika anda tidak biasa dengan pegawai bertugas in pejabat.

8. Kita adakan signboard sebagai simbol perpaduan penduduk Uni Garden. Tiga cukuplah. Jadi boleh minta sponsor dari KRT, CP dan Rela. Mereka (pencuri) yang nak pecah masuk rumah akan fikir dua kali selepas perasan "sign board" tersebut.

9. CCTV boleh mencegah jenayah. Jadi CCTV yang dipasang dirumah yang terletak berdekatan kawasan keluar/masuk boleh dihalakan sebijik ke arah laluan kenderaan. Video boleh ditonton melalui internet.

10. Jalan keluar masuk terlalu banyak. Lebih 5. Jadi perlu minta bantuan Majlis Samarahan tutup beberapa. Mungkin boleh "divide" Uni G kepada kita kawasan berasingan dan setiap kawasan hanya ada satu pintu keluar/masuk. "Legal aspect" dan kelulusan mungkin jadi penghalang, kecuali jalan persendirian (private road). Menutup jalan oleh orang awam adalah salah disisi undang-undang.

11. Jalan utama banyak kereta lalu lalang & boleh pandu laju, termasuklah pencuri. Jadi kita minta bantuan Majlis Samarahan pasang "bump" secukupnya. Wakil penghuni perlu kemukaan pelan cadangan lokasi "bump".

12. Uni Capital & Square belum ada CCTV macam Tabuan Jaya. Jadi kita minta bantuan Majlis Samarahan pasang CCTV.

13. Dapatkan perkhidmatan keselamatan perumahan (peronda, CCTV, alarm, dll). Bayaran sebulan mungkin kurang dari RM50 jika cukup penyertaan. Kalau boleh, "service provider" dapatkan petugas - petugas dari mereka yang menetap lama di sini dan selepas mendapat kelulusan wakil-wakil penghuni/Lorong.

14. Adakah pondok Rela, CP dan/atau KRT.

15. Kurangkan objek-objek (cthnya: semak samun) di kawasan perumahan yang boleh menjadi tempat pencuri bersembunyi.

16. Bekerjasama peronda dengan pihak "security" berdekatan. Cthnya Pegawai keselamatan Uni Square Apartment, Yung Seng Construction dan Kwang Tai Construction.

How to improve room security

Flash flood issue

Flash flood issue in Uni Garden (Lorong 1, 2, 3 & 4) Uni Vista Lorong 1.

Back ground

On 18th January 2015, Uni Vista experience worst flash flood in "history":
1. 150 houses (to confirm) in Uni Garden - 6 inches water on entry road.
2. Ten houses in Uni Vista - Water level up to 2.5 feet. Water enter the houses.
3. Thirty houses in Uni Vista - Water level up to about 1 feet on the road in front of the houses.

Uni Vista experience at less 10 times flood in 2014 (between 1 foot and 2 feet). In the previous years, between 2010 - 2014, the same area only experiences one or two serious flash flood (about 2 feet high).

Possible causes

1. Housing development going up but culvert (two at traffic light) crossing Samarahan ExpressWay never upgraded.
2. One culvert near Central City was block (to confirm).
3. Some water from Central City direction was allow to flow to drain in front of Uni Vista.
4. Geography condition in Uni Garden (Lorong 1, 2, 3, 4 & Uni Vista) not really allow water flow toward a river in Kg. Merdang. Also land issue (can't just built a big drain through private land).
5. Rain rate exceed the out flow rate. Suspect current bottle neck at culvert at traffic light.
6. Close of a water outlet via Unimas (Golf course). Reopen in 2015.

Possible solutions (Drainage designs)

1. To upgrade the culvert crossing Samarahan Expressway from Uni Vista. Current culvert (two adjacent to each others) are only three feets in diameter each, located near to traffic light. It is better if a new culvert to be installed at North side of Uni Vista. If the drain along the road at unimas side become the next bottle neck, then upgrade the drain capacity (as mention by Michael Ang is this WhatsApp Group).
2. There is road linking Central City & Uni Garden. Then it is possible to have a drain linkage. If the drain linkage exist, the it is possible to channel the water from Lorong 12 to a river in Merdang via this lingkage.
3. Uni Vista flood by water flow from Uni Garden, Uni Suare, Uni Capital & (a new housing beside Lorong 1, 3, 5,7). There is a culvert between Uni Square shop & Uni Vista. During heavy rain, blocking water from entering Uni Vista at this culvert may prevent flash flood there. Blocking with water gate (valve).

Possible solutions (Sound out our problem)

1. Meet Samarahan Council, DID & JKR.
2. Uni Garden & Uni Vista community to work together. Include data collection (include short video clips) on water flow during flood.
3. Make use of TaliKhidmat. Call followup from time to time.
4. Come out with proper petition letter (mention by Mr. Ralpheal from Lrg 12k2D)
4. Report to Biro Pengaduan Awam (mention by Pn. Nuralia from Lrg 3).
5. Report to local newspaper.
6. Take advantage of 2016 election machine & politic.

Install gate at entry to each alley in Uni Garden

An alley or alleyway is a narrow lane, path, or passageway, often reserved for pedestrians, which usually runs between, behind, or within buildings in the older parts of towns and cities. It is also a rear access or service road (back lane), or a path or walk in a park or garden. In Uni Garden & many housing in Kuching, there is an alley at the back of each house (Photo 1).

Installing a gate at entry to our alley (Photo 2, 3, 4 & 5) can make entry from backyard more difficult. Thank to Mr. Jee for point out the idea.

The photos 2 - 5 were taken at BDC (Jalan Song) neighborhood.

To make this happen, we have to obtain agreement from our neighbors. All must agree with the design & specification.

The cheapest method is to look for a second hand gate. Some of our neighbor may has plan to change their gate.

We have to agree on who are going to keep the keys. Contact hp no. can be hang next to the doors.

District Council will need to access to the area for cleaning. We have to propose the solutions.

I would like to encourage reader to suggest & add to this post. Together, let us make a better solution.

Advantage:
1. Can view clearly from far (100m away)
2. Can enter room from outside, if a door or a window is open.
3. Can view from sky.

Disadvantage:
1. Drone is expensive (RM1k - RM4k)
2. Maintenance cost.
3. Drone can crash. $ gone.

Welcome & Introduction

WhatsApp Group is a place to inform your neighbor when you notice suspicious ppl/event appear in Uni Garden/ Uni Vista. So recipients (members in this group) can inform their gang [KRT, CP, RELA, friends, neighbor next doors, Church/Surau members, your neighborhood watch team] or/and authorities (e.g. 999, Police &/OR Bomba) accordingly.

You can send SOS here, when you encounter a house break in. Anybody here can forward the info to other groups or start rescue attempt.

A blog was create to allow better way to view of shared information (e.g. home securities).

“WE LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER” is the key to Neighborhood Watch success. Observation, looking out for each other, is a skill honed through diligent practice. Watching includes both seeing suspicious activity and also listening for suspicious sound.

You are encouraged to form your own group, to work together to safeguard your belongings (and personal/family security).
